## Chef's Tips & Notes

- Pulse the blender in short bursts — don't purée! Salsa should have a chunky, rustic texture. Over-blending turns it into tomato sauce.
- Let the salsa rest in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before serving. This resting time allows the lime juice, salt, and spices to meld together and the flavors to develop fully.
- For a smokier salsa, char the tomatoes, onion, and jalapeño under the broiler or on a grill for 3–4 minutes before blending. The charred edges add incredible depth.

### How to Make the Best Salsa

Making homemade salsa is a simple process! Firstly, roughly chop all the vegetables (and fruit, namely tomatoes). Add the chopped vegetables to a food processor or a blender, along with spices, sugar and lime juice.

Pulse in quick bursts until the mixture is finely chopped. Don’t over-blend it to porridge, salsa has to keep a bit chunky texture.

### What is salsa eaten with

Salsa can be eaten with various foods and used in various ways. The most common way to enjoy salsa is as a dip with tortilla chips or nachos, but it can also be used as a condiment to enhance the flavor of dishes such as:

- Tacos,
- Burritos,
- Fajitas — for example, [Sheet Pan Shrimp Fajitas](/recipes/easy-shrimp-fajitas/)
- Grilled shrimp and vegetables

Salsa can be spooned on top of eggs, used as a dressing for salads or mixed with rice and beans for added flavor. It can also be used as a marinade or sauce for cooking, and some people even enjoy it straight out of the jar. The possibilities are endless! Moreover, lime juice, onions, and tomatoes are all rich sources of the antioxidant vitamin C, as well homemade salsa is full of fiber without any fat or sugar so is considered to be healthy!

### Substitutions & Variations

As a personal chef who specializes in dietary accommodations, I always encourage my clients to adapt recipes to their individual needs. Here are some practical variations for this recipe:

- **Milder Version:** Omit the jalapeño and reduce the chili powder to a pinch. Add a squeeze of extra lime juice and a bit more sugar to balance the flavors for those who prefer less heat.
- **Spicier Version:** Add a whole jalapeño (with seeds) or swap in a serrano pepper for more kick. A dash of cayenne or hot sauce takes the heat up another notch.
- **Naturally Healthy:** This salsa is already naturally gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan as written. It’s packed with vitamin C from the tomatoes and lime juice, and has virtually no fat.

### Frequently Asked Questions

****How long does homemade salsa last in the fridge?****

Fresh homemade salsa keeps well in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3–5 days. The lime juice acts as a natural preservative. You may notice some liquid separating at the bottom — that’s normal. Just give it a stir before serving.

****Can I make this salsa without a food processor?****

Absolutely! Simply dice all the vegetables by hand into small, uniform pieces and mix everything together in a bowl. Hand-chopped salsa (salsa cruda) actually has a more traditional, chunkier texture that many people prefer.

****Can I use fresh tomatoes instead of canned?****

Yes! Replace the crushed canned tomatoes with about 2–3 additional diced Roma tomatoes. Fresh tomatoes will make the salsa brighter and a bit more watery. If it’s too juicy, drain off some of the liquid or let it sit in a colander for a few minutes before mixing.
