## Chef's Tips & Notes

- Serve appetizers at the proper temperature — hot items piping hot, cold items well chilled. Temperature is a critical component of texture and flavor that many home cooks overlook.
- Keep portions small and elegant. Appetizers should whet the appetite, not overwhelm it — a presentation philosophy I refined during my years in fine dining.
- Prepare as much as possible in advance and assemble at the last minute for the freshest presentation and flavors.

### What are stuffed mushrooms made of?

Here is the list of ingredients in the spinach and cream cheese stuffed portobello mushrooms recipe:

1. Portobello mushrooms: These large mushrooms have a deep, earthy flavor and a meaty texture, making them an excellent choice for stuffing. They serve as the base for this dish, holding the filling and providing a substantial bite.
2. Cream cheese: A soft, creamy, and mildly tangy cheese that adds a rich and smooth texture to the filling. It also helps to bind the other ingredients together.
3. Cilantro: Fresh herb that adds a savory aroma and flavor to the dish. By the way, cilantro contains vitamins A, C, and K, and the leaves also have folate, potassium, and manganese.
4. Garlic cloves: Fresh garlic cloves add a savory depth and pungent aroma to the dish. When cooked, they become milder in flavor and contribute a subtle, sweet undertone.
5. Salt and pepper: Essential seasonings that help to bring out the natural flavors of the other ingredients and add a touch of spiciness.
6. Cheddar cheese: A semi-hard cheese with a sharp, slightly tangy flavor that adds depth and richness to the dish. When melted, it creates a gooey, savory topping that complements the creamy spinach and cream cheese filling.

### How to make stuffed mushrooms?

Wash the mushrooms and pat them with a paper towel. Remove the stems.

![Portobello mushrooms](https://cdn.personalchefana.com/assets/images/recipes/stuffed-mushrooms-3.jpg)

In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese with the chopped cilantro, salt, pepper and minced garlic. Mix well to ensure the cilantro is evenly distributed throughout the cream cheese.

Stuff each mushroom cap with the cream cheese mixture. Make sure to evenly divide the filling among the mushroom caps. Dip the tops in a bowl with grated cheddar cheese. Place the mushrooms on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or lightly greased with cooking spray.

Bake the stuffed mushrooms at 350°F (175°C) for 15–20 minutes or until they are tender and the filling is heated through. Then take them out of the oven, let them cook for some minutes and enjoy!

### What temperature do you cook baked stuffed mushrooms?

Baked stuffed mushrooms are typically cooked at a temperature of 350°F (175°C). This moderate temperature allows the mushrooms to become tender and the filling to heat through without overcooking or drying out the mushrooms.

![Stuffed Mushrooms recipe](https://cdn.personalchefana.com/assets/images/recipes/stuffed-mushrooms-7.jpg)

### Do you cook mushrooms covered or uncovered?

When baking stuffed mushrooms, you typically cook them uncovered. This allows the moisture from the mushrooms to evaporate, preventing them from becoming soggy. Cooking them uncovered also helps the filling and cheese, if using, to become slightly browned and crisp on top, which adds a nice contrast to the tender mushroom caps. However, if you’re cooking large mushrooms or if the filling is very moist, you may want to cover the mushrooms with aluminum foil for the first half of the baking time. This can help to steam the mushrooms, making them tender without drying out the filling. After the initial baking time, remove the foil and continue baking uncovered to allow the filling to brown and any excess moisture to evaporate.

### What goes well with stuffed mushrooms?

Stuffed mushrooms can be served as an appetizer or a side dish, and they pair well with various dishes. Here are some ideas for what to serve alongside stuffed mushrooms:

1. Grilled or roasted vegetables: Simple grilled or roasted vegetables, such as asparagus, bell peppers, zucchini, or eggplant, complement the rich, creamy taste of the stuffed mushrooms.
2. Salad: A fresh, light salad can provide a nice contrast to the richness of the stuffed mushrooms. Here are some good salad pairings:

3. Rice or grain-based side dishes: Pilaf, quinoa, couscous, or risotto can be a great accompaniment to stuffed mushrooms, providing a neutral base that absorbs the flavors of the mushrooms and filling. For example:
   - [Superfoods Quinoa Salad](/recipes/superfoods-quinoa-salad/)
   - [Apple Bulgur Salad](/recipes/apple-bulgur-salad/)
   - [Ptitim with Homemade Pesto](/recipes/ptitim-with-homemade-pesto/)

   - [Pistachio-crusted Salmon Bites](/recipes/pistachio-salmon-bites/)
   - [Sea Bass in Asian Sauce](/recipes/sea-bass-in-asian-sauce/)
5. Pasta dishes: A simple pasta dish can complement the earthy and rich flavors of the stuffed mushrooms. For example:
   - [Lemon Garlic Shrimp Pasta](/recipes/lemon-garlic-shrimp-pasta/)
   - [Easy Mussels Marinara](/recipes/easy-mussels-marinara/)
6. Soup: A light, flavorful soup can pair well with stuffed mushrooms as a starter or side dish. For example:

   - [Finnish Creamy Salmon Soup – Lohikeitto](/recipes/finnish-salmon-soup-lohikeitto/)

Feel free to mix and match these ideas based on your preferences and the other dishes you plan to serve. The key is to provide a balance of flavors and textures that complement the stuffed mushrooms without overpowering them.

### Substitutions & Variations

As a personal chef who specializes in dietary accommodations, I always encourage my clients to adapt recipes to their individual needs. Here are some practical variations for this recipe:

- **Gluten-Free:** This recipe is naturally gluten-free as written — no modifications needed.
- **Dairy-Free:** Replace the cream cheese with a plant-based cream cheese alternative and the cheddar with a vegan shredded cheese or nutritional yeast for a similar savory, golden topping.
- **Vegan:** Use plant-based cream cheese and vegan shredded cheese. The mushrooms, cilantro, and garlic provide plenty of rich flavor on their own.
- **Low-Sodium:** Reduce or omit added salt and use herbs, citrus zest, and spices for flavor instead. Fresh lemon juice and freshly cracked black pepper can brighten any dish without extra sodium.

### Frequently Asked Questions

****Can I stuff the mushrooms ahead of time?****

Yes! You can assemble the stuffed mushrooms up to a day in advance. Place them in a single layer on the baking sheet, cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate. When ready to serve, bake as directed — you may need to add 2–3 extra minutes since they start cold.

****Why are my stuffed mushrooms watery?****

Mushrooms release moisture as they cook. To prevent a watery result, remove the stems and gently scrape out the gills with a spoon before stuffing. You can also lightly salt the mushroom caps and let them sit upside down on a paper towel for 10 minutes to draw out excess liquid.

****What size mushrooms work best for stuffing?****

Large portobello or baby bella (cremini) mushrooms work best. Portobellos make a substantial appetizer or even a light main course, while cremini mushrooms are perfect for bite-sized party appetizers.

****Can I freeze stuffed mushrooms?****

Yes! Freeze them unbaked on a parchment-lined baking sheet until solid, then transfer to a freezer bag for up to 2 months. Bake directly from frozen at 375°F for 25–30 minutes — no need to thaw first.
