What does this Chocolate Chickpea Spread consist of?
Chocolate Chickpea Spread is made from chickpeas, cocoa powder, sweeteners, and optional flavorings such as vanilla extract. Itβs a Chocolate Hummus in some way!
Chickpeas are the main ingredient and provide the spread with a creamy texture and nutty flavor β moreover, they are high in dietary fiber, especially soluble fiber.
Cocoa powder is added to give the spread a rich chocolate flavor without the added sugar and unhealthy fats found in traditional chocolate spreads.
Pure maple syrup, honey, or other natural sweeteners are used to sweeten the spread, and a pinch of salt is added to enhance the flavors.
Some recipes may also include additional flavorings such as peanut butter to give the spread a unique taste. This spread is a healthier alternative to traditional chocolate spreads, as it is higher in protein and fiber and lower in sugar and unhealthy fats.

Substitutions & Variations
As a personal chef who specializes in dietary accommodations, I always encourage my clients to adapt recipes to their individual needs. Here are some practical variations for this recipe:
- Vegan-Friendly: Swap honey for pure maple syrup or agave nectar in equal amounts. Both provide a similar sweetness profile without compromising the dishβs overall flavor.
- Nut Butter Boost: Add 1β2 tablespoons of peanut butter, almond butter, or tahini for extra creaminess and a richer flavor that makes this taste even more like Nutella.
- Extra Creamy: If the spread is too thick, blend in a tablespoon of milk (dairy or plant-based) at a time until you reach your desired consistency.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it actually taste like chickpeas?
Not at all! Once blended with cocoa powder, honey, and vanilla, the chickpea flavor disappears completely. The taste is remarkably similar to Nutella β rich, chocolatey, and smooth. Most people cannot guess the secret ingredient.
Can I use canned chickpeas or do I need dried?
Canned chickpeas work perfectly and save time. Drain and rinse them well, then pat dry with a paper towel. For the very smoothest texture, you can slip the skins off each chickpea β it takes a few extra minutes but produces a silkier result.
How long does this spread keep?
Stored in an airtight container or jar in the refrigerator, it keeps for up to 1 week. The spread may thicken as it chills β just stir in a splash of milk or water to loosen it before serving. You can also freeze it for up to 3 months.
