Citrus Salad variations
This Citrus Salad recipe is very simple and delicious! Moreover, you can change the ingredients according to your taste. Some variations of this Citrus Salad that I recommend:
- Salad base. You can replace Batavia lettuce with Radicchio salad which is a base ingredient in the classic Sicilian Citrus salad recipe.
- Citruses. In this Citrus Salad, I use oranges and grapefruit, however, red-fleshed navel oranges, such as Cara Cara navel orange, tangerines or Pomelo would also work well! Oranges are low in calories and high in nutrients, including vitamin C, fiber, folate, and potassium.
- Celery. One of the good flavors that can be added to this salad can be taken from Fennel, so donβt hesitate to add it to celery or replace it.
- Cheese. I like to add some creamy-salty flavor to balance the juiciness of citruses, feta is good at it. However you can replace it with Parmesan, the taste will be different, tangier rather than creamy, but itβs also one of the possible options. You can skip the cheese and make this Citrus Salad vegan. Then you can add some typical Italian ingredients such as Kalamata olives or capers.
- Nuts. I used freshly roasted Pine nuts, but I believe that some cashews or walnuts would also be good!
How to make Citrus Salad
Letβs begin with the pine nuts. Place a pan on medium heat and roast the nuts for a couple of minutes, stirring. They get a nice brown crust and give a pine aroma. I like it!
Roughly cut Batavia lettuce.
Peel and cut oranges into slices and then into triangles. Make sure to remove the orange seeds and pith, we donβt need them in this recipe. Peel and cut grapefruit, and remove its pith.
Cut celery stalks obliquely and cut the red onion into semi-circles.
Prepare the Honey Orange dressing by combining extra-virgin olive oil, orange juice, honey and honey mustard till smooth. I take the ingredients out of the fridge an hour before cooking so by the cooking time they reach room temperature and itβs easier to mix them.
Assemble the Salad. Place the lettuce leaves on a large serving plate, and spread orange and grapefruit pieces over it. Then place onion semi-rings and celery.
With your hands, break the feta into rough pieces or just cut it and add them to the salad. Sprinkle Citrus Salad with roasted pine nuts.
Drizzle the Salad with Honey Orange dressing. Garnish with freshly ground black pepper and enjoy!

A Note from Chef Ana
This Citrus Salad reminds me of sunny afternoons in Sicily, where I first fell in love with the tradition of pairing fresh citrus with savory cheeses and toasted nuts. It is one of the dishes I prepare most often for my clients across The Woodlands, Spring, and the greater Houston area β especially during the winter months when Texas citrus is at its peak. My tip: always peel the citrus over the bowl so you capture every drop of juice for the dressing.
Whether you are hosting a dinner party, planning a celebration, or simply want a wholesome meal for your family, I would love to bring this recipe β and many more β to your table. Substitutions & Variations
As a personal chef who specializes in dietary accommodations, I always encourage my clients to adapt recipes to their individual needs. Here are some practical variations for this recipe:
- Dairy-Free: Replace cheese with a high-quality plant-based alternative such as cashew cheese or nutritional yeast. For cream-based elements, coconut cream or oat cream are excellent substitutes that maintain richness and body.
- Vegan-Friendly: Swap honey for pure maple syrup or agave nectar in equal amounts. Both provide a similar sweetness profile without compromising the dishβs overall flavor.
- Nut-Free: Substitute nuts with sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, or toasted coconut flakes for a similar crunch without the allergen concern.
Frequently Asked Questions
What type of citrus works best for this salad?
Navel oranges and pink grapefruit are the classic combination, but feel free to experiment. Blood oranges add a stunning deep red color, Cara Cara oranges bring a rosy pink hue, and tangerines add an extra punch of sweetness. Using a mix of varieties makes the salad even more beautiful.
Can I make this salad ahead of time?
You can prep the components up to a day ahead β peel and segment the citrus, wash the lettuce, slice the celery and onion, and store everything separately in airtight containers in the refrigerator. Assemble on the platter and add the dressing, pine nuts, and feta just before serving so everything stays fresh and crisp.
What can I use instead of feta?
Shaved Parmesan gives a tangier, nuttier flavor. For dairy-free, skip the cheese entirely and add Kalamata olives or capers for that salty contrast β this is actually how many traditional Sicilian versions are made. Burrata is a luxurious option that pairs beautifully with citrus.
