Substitutions & Variations
As a personal chef who specializes in dietary accommodations, I always encourage my clients to adapt recipes to their individual needs. Here are some practical variations for this recipe:
- Milder Version: Omit the jalapeΓ±o and reduce the chili powder to a pinch. Add a squeeze of extra lime juice and a bit more sugar to balance the flavors for those who prefer less heat.
- Spicier Version: Add a whole jalapeΓ±o (with seeds) or swap in a serrano pepper for more kick. A dash of cayenne or hot sauce takes the heat up another notch.
- Naturally Healthy: This salsa is already naturally gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan as written. Itβs packed with vitamin C from the tomatoes and lime juice, and has virtually no fat.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does homemade salsa last in the fridge?
Fresh homemade salsa keeps well in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3β5 days. The lime juice acts as a natural preservative. You may notice some liquid separating at the bottom β thatβs normal. Just give it a stir before serving.
Can I make this salsa without a food processor?
Absolutely! Simply dice all the vegetables by hand into small, uniform pieces and mix everything together in a bowl. Hand-chopped salsa (salsa cruda) actually has a more traditional, chunkier texture that many people prefer.
Can I use fresh tomatoes instead of canned?
Yes! Replace the crushed canned tomatoes with about 2β3 additional diced Roma tomatoes. Fresh tomatoes will make the salsa brighter and a bit more watery. If itβs too juicy, drain off some of the liquid or let it sit in a colander for a few minutes before mixing.
