Is blue cheese good for you?

Blue cheese, like most cheese, is a good source of protein, calcium, and other nutrients, but it is also high in fat and sodium. Moderate consumption of blue cheese as part of a balanced diet is generally considered safe and can offer some health benefits. For example, the calcium in blue cheese can help to strengthen bones, while the protein can help to build and repair tissues. However, people with high blood pressure or heart disease may want to limit their intake of blue cheese due to its high sodium content. blue cheese

Substitutions & Variations

As a personal chef who specializes in dietary accommodations, I always encourage my clients to adapt recipes to their individual needs. Here are some practical variations for this recipe:

  • Dairy-Free: Replace the blue cheese with crumbled cashew cheese, marinated tofu crumbles, or a generous sprinkle of nutritional yeast. Each option provides a savory, tangy element that complements the mango and avocado.
  • Vegan-Friendly: Swap honey in the dressing for pure maple syrup or agave nectar in equal amounts, and use a dairy-free cheese alternative. Both provide a similar sweetness profile without compromising the dish’s overall flavor.
  • Nut-Free: Substitute the cashews with toasted sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, or toasted coconut flakes for a similar crunch without the allergen concern.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I keep the avocado from browning?

Cut and add the avocado right before serving. If you need to prep ahead, toss the cubes with a squeeze of fresh lime juice β€” the citric acid slows oxidation and keeps the avocado vibrant green for about an hour. Store covered with plastic wrap pressed directly onto the surface.

What can I use instead of blue cheese?

Feta cheese or goat cheese both pair beautifully with mango and avocado. Feta offers a tangy, briny flavor, while goat cheese adds a creamy, earthy note. For a dairy-free option, try crumbled cashew cheese or a generous sprinkle of nutritional yeast.

How do I pick the perfect mango for this salad?

A ripe mango should give slightly when pressed, similar to a ripe avocado. It should smell fragrant and sweet near the stem. If your mango is still firm, let it ripen at room temperature for 1–2 days. Avoid mangoes with wrinkled skin or dark spots, as they may be overripe.
